Gok Wan bigs up body confidence – at No. 10!
You may have heard about Gok Wan’s fabulous crusade to get body confidence lessons onto the National Curriculum in PSHE lessons. (That’s Personal, Social and Health Education.) Following an unsuccessful attempt to arrange a meeting with education secretary Ed Balls, his quest continued recently when he arrived at Downing Street with a petition containing 45,000 signatures in favour of his proposal.
Accompanied by his fabulous body confidence ambassador Shona, winner of Gok’s Miss Naked Beauty contest, Gok explained that it’s our responsibility to help look after the next generation:
“When I first started filming How to Look Good Naked I had no idea of the body hatred epidemic.”
“Over 70 per cent of teenagers have admitted they have little or no body confidence at all.”The average woman in this country is exposed to over 3,000 images of perfection every week, of air-brushing and re-touching and our teenagers are aspiring to look like these people.
“After five years filming the show I feel confident that a difference can be made. We need to teach the next generation that what we see in the media is not a fair representation of the real body.
I think it’s a brilliant idea. The media is affecting people younger and younger these days so it’s important to speak to young people in their ‘formative’ years to help them grow up happy and confident. Good luck Gok and Shona from everyone at Simply Yours!

This is such a good idea! One of my best friends has been in hospital for two nearly three years because of anorexia. It has effected me alot and I do worry about her but if we had body confidance lessons in school they could tell you want is normal for growing teens and wat isnt this would prevent anorexia and not feeling confident. One thing that makes me feel less confidant is that i have really sensitive skin so i get little rashes from washing powder no matter what type it is but even just watching your show makes me want to wear a bikini when i go swimming and lovely dresses! Thank you Gok!!!! Xx

Mi name is Weronika and I have 17 years. I’m watching your program ‘How it look good Naked’. I am impressed how quickly and well you are able to change grey mice into beautiful and self-confident women. I am thinking how you are doing it. I thought that he was with me badly, but when I watched you program about how you fought overweight and you hid yourself behind various roles in the drama school feels that I am a bit similar to you. I am an outsider.. I am hiding myself behind soils which I am playing in the cabaret. I don’t often know what I am supposed to do. I know, that it of fast beside the point, but I wanted only to ask for advice. How am I supposed to become more self-confident? Well I am supposed to do so that people in me don’t only notice and of exclusively a cabaret actor.
Bless.

Hi Gok,
Your earlier episodes of How to look good naked are shown on television in the Netherlands.
I want to tell you how much I love your work and your show. You learned me to feel a little bit better about my body. The only problem still is: How to dress it?
So when will be the first going dutch episode?

Gok,
I just watched your programe ” Too fat, too young”. I’m in admiration of you, I’m not someone who has ever been obese but I stuggled after each of my kids! I’ve been proud of myself at times for my committment to exercise and diet to try and stay inshape. You are an inspiration to all women and I was shocked to see what struggles you’ve overcome and how you’ve used that to create such a fantastic career for yourself and all that take the time to watch.
As mother of two gorgeous girls, you provide comfort to me that there are realistic body image people out there and you are making a huge difference to all shapes, sizes and ages!
You go gorgeous!
We love you,
Jill (thirty something), Jessica (7) and Charlotte (4)
