Is plastic surgery the real cause of a boost in big bra sales?

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

According to last week’s article in the Telegraph, big high-street lingerie retailers are seeing a big increase in the sales of bras in bigger sizes, with the average bra size sold now one cup size bigger than it was 5 years ago.

Debenhams now reports that 63% of its bra sales are in a D cup or above, whereas at M&S the market now represents a quarter of its bra sales.

So what’s the cause of this sudden ‘uplift’ in big bra sales?

The focus of the article suggests it’s the increase in breast-enlargement surgery. With a reported 10,000 women having boob jobs last year, it’s certainly no longer just the rich and famous opting for the costly operation.

Another reason suggested (which I would like to think is more likely to be the main cause) is that more women are now having their bra size accurately measured these days. Many women find that their actual bra size is one or two cup sizes bigger than they thought they were. Take a look at our bra measuring guide and videos to help find your ideal bra size and style.

One reason not mentioned is that women are just generally curvier these days! With the average UK dress size a size 14-16 boobs are bound to be bigger… and that means big bras – naturally.

At Simply Yours we’ve been making beautiful lingerie in big bra sizes for nearly 2 years now, with selected bras available up to K cup and L cup. 81% of our bra sales are in D+ cup sizes, and our Gok Wan lingerie range offers a sexy bra, basque and bodyshaper in A to G cup.

I wonder what Gok Wan would make of the increase in boob jobs? Especially with his new show ‘Miss Naked Beauty’ set to air later this month, all about finding true beauty – stripped of make up and all things artificial.

What it all comes down to really is what it takes to make you feel good. I’m sure he’d say that, whether big boobs or small, you should see what the Gok Wan shapewear can do for you before going under the knife. With all its gorgeous details it will certainly give you a lift – to both your boobs and your mood!

What to do with your old bras

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

The other week I posted about how you need to get rid of any old underwear that’s past its prime. If it’s saggy and baggy it’s only going to make you look and feel the same! And one thing’s for sure, once you’ve got some Gok Wan lingerie, all your other underwear will definitely pale in comparison.

But what can you do with your old bras? Understandably, charity shops aren’t keen on selling-on second hand underwear. However in these days when everyone is going green, there is something you can do to recycle your bras.

Take your bras to Oxfam

Although Oxfam don’t sell bras in their charity shops, they can send them on to their Wastesaver recycling plant. Wastesaver will either recycle the fabric of the bra, or send them on to developing countries where bras from western countries are heavily sought-after.

Get crafty with your bras!

Follow this step-by-step project guide to making a purse from your old bra.
I think the bra bag looks pretty cute – though obviously it depends what bra you use!

You’ll be pleased to know that as the Gok Wan lingerie is made from the best fabrics in the business it will last and last… so hopefully will never end up as a bra bag!

Anyone got any other ideas for recycling bras?

All bras bright and beautiful

This season, lingerie is all about vivid and vivacious shades. At Simply Yours we agree with Gok Wan: you shouldn’t be ashamed to be seen in your undies. You should show them off –your body is beautiful. And when it comes to showing off, the bolder and brighter the better! That’s why Gok chose the gorgeous ‘Passion’ purple colour to launch his lingerie range, and why he opted for hot Gok pink for all the lovely linings, lacings and logos. Luscious!

Over at Simply Yours the Gok Wan underwear range is definitely the star of the show, but we’re very excited about our new season lingerie collection too – especially the colours. With bras in juicy berry shades of deep pink, red, purple and blue, it’s enough to get your mouth watering just thinking about it! It’s nice to wear a brightly coloured bra; it does cheer you up in the morning and if you wear a lot of black (like me) you can get away with any colour at all! A pretty coloured bra strap on show looks sexy; Gok’s definitely all for it as he recommended showing off your bra straps on How to Look Good Naked.

The worst colour for a bra has got to be that washed-too-many-times-white-gone-grey colour – ugh! If your bras have turned this unsexiest of shades then it’s time you treated yourself to some new ones. Fresh white, classic black or fruity pink – whatever you fancy it’ll be a big improvement!

Here’s a few bright and beautiful bras from the new Simply Yours range:

Simply Yours - very just for bigger busts

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

You may have heard about the recent kafuffle caused by Marks and Spencer’s’ bra pricing policy, as protested against by the fabulously named Facebook group ‘Busts 4 Justice’. Rightly or wrongly, M&S began charging women more for some bras in bigger sizes.
Admittedly, there is an extra level of craftsmanship involved in making bigger bras, and that’s something we know all about at Simply Yours. When you’re making a bra that goes up to a JJ cup, K cup or L cup, as we do, you’ve got to make sure that the bra is still supportive enough – and still completely comfortable too. This can mean extra panels of reinforcing fabrics, more sections to the cups, stronger underwiring and sometimes wider bra straps too. So at Simply Yours we have a team of experts dedicated to making sure every beautiful bra still gives a great shape in bigger sizes.

What we don’t do is charge you more for bigger bras. When you’ve got big boobs it can be hard enough just to find a bra that’s actually in your bra size – until you discover Simply Yours of course. So once you do find that bra, we don’t think it’s right to charge you more for it, and the same goes for Gok Wan’s lingerie range for Simply Yours, available up to size 32 and bra size 42G.

Are you wearing the right sized bra?

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

There are so many different statistics bandied about regarding what percentage of women are wearing the wrong sized bra. One thing’s for sure - a lot of people have got it wrong. Having worked at Simply Yours for a while I’ve picked up a thing or two about bras… and now when I spot someone wearing a badly fitting bra it stands out a mile; bra straps up between the shoulder blades, the dreaded ‘double boob’ effect or simply a bust that’s not quite as perky as it could be!

All these bra problems are so easily fixed – the most common mistake is to wear a bra back size too big and a bra cup size or two too small but if you’re not sure, take a look at the Simply Yours bra fitting guide. There’s 3 different videos showing you how to find your correct bra size, how to spot when your bra doesn’t fot, and a guide to different bra styles.

Different styles and shapes of bras can fit you differently – no matter how much measuring you do. It can be a good idea just to try on a few until you find your perfect fit. What’s great about Simply Yours is that you can try on your bras in your own home on under various outfits – very important!
